Seeds Started

3/20/11 - My grow light mini-greenhouse in the basement is up and running.  Planted the first round of seeds -- all old, saved seeds from last year and two years back.  I wasn't sure if they'd be warm enough, since the basement is pretty cool.
  • White pumpkins (seeds from an hierloom pumpkin we bought in Westerly last year)
  • Gray pumpkins (same as above)
  • Spinach (saved seeds from plants gifted two years back - last year they didn't make it)
  • Basil (saved seeds from two years back)
  • Kale (seeds from Elizabeth)
3/24/11 - Amazingly...only four days later, seedlings are already appearing...kale came first and spinach soon after.   The pumpkin seeds may not have any life in them, but there's always a chance.

Chicken-sitting with Elizabeth

Chicken-sitting with E, 3/20/11.
Elizabeth took me by her friend's house (in providence), where she's chicken-sitting two hens.  The coop was so simple, and the set up so easy...feed and water once a day, collect two eggs, and make sure everything's ok.  Can't wait until next summer when we add two ladies to the back yard.

March 2011

Surprise croqui that popped up in the back yard, 3/19/11.

So much has happened this month. At the end of Feb. we closed on our first home-something I had no idea was even possible just a few months back. We spent the next two weeks moving books and boxes in our little Yaris, while movers brought over the furniture last Saturday. Our first house guests arrived this weekend -- Brian and Mike -- which gave us a break from unpacking.
Chris grilled on our first night.

I love the house; it already feels like home. The back yard is screaming for a giant garden, and I'm moving gravel, hauling leaves into our new compost pile, and sowing seeds, every chance I get.
First outline of the new garden, 3/13/11.

URI should be testing the soil in this new plot, sometime this week....

raised beds

...wondering if I could use these drawers as raised beds in the yard. Dresser is shot, but this old wood is pretty.

Night-time reading

Had a great visit with Chris' parents, moved most of the kitchen over to the new place today, and discovered that I can easily start the garden without having someone come in and haul off all that gravel.

My next garden to be.

...if I can just get rid of all that gravel.
