Chicken-sitting with Elizabeth

Chicken-sitting with E, 3/20/11.
Elizabeth took me by her friend's house (in providence), where she's chicken-sitting two hens.  The coop was so simple, and the set up so easy...feed and water once a day, collect two eggs, and make sure everything's ok.  Can't wait until next summer when we add two ladies to the back yard.

Homebound...the Last 7 Days

Last Saturday - Our first outing with our realtor.  I have a bit of a hangover from last night's visit from friends.  One house we visit smells like dog pee.  Third home, walking distance to Chris' work, unexpectedly knocks our socks off.  At the top of the stairs of this cute little Cape, Chris whispers to me, "I love this place. We should bid on it right away."  I can't argue. It feels like a happy house. At our last stop, we run into a nice young couple also shopping for a home.  We wish them luck.

Sunday - Chris & I sit down to make an offer on the happy house, but are ready to play hardball in the bidding process.  Our realtor informs us that the couple we met yesterday are putting in a bid as well.  Now we're trying not to blow it.  We offer asking price and put down the largest down payment possible.  The sellers have until 6pm tomorrow to respond.

Monday - I haven't slept in two nights and am going crazy at work.  Chris calls just after 1pm to say we got the house (much rejoicing).  I celebrate with co-workers, Chris joins us, and we go home and crash.  I still can't sleep.

Tuesday - Did we just buy a house in 3 days?  We can afford this, right?  Did we make the decision too quickly?  Can I take a mental health day tomorrow?  I can?  Thank you so much.

Wednesday - Mental health day = shoveling snow, doing taxes, and meeting with the mortgage broker again.  Paperwork paperwork.  How do we get home owners insurance?  Schedule the inspection as soon as possible?  I sleep well for the first night this week.

Thursday - We continue to gather funds, by requesting an advance and looking into borrowing against our 401Ks (first time home buyers have little and sometimes no penalty).

Friday - Chris is on the phone all day comparing insurance estimates. We meet with the realtor again, re-read the fine print, and sign the purchase and sale.  I think we just bought a house.  Well, if everything goes well tomorrow.

Saturday - We spend over 2 hours at the house inspection.  The happy house has no major issues and the inspector gives us a 101 on oil tanks, gutter maintenance, plumbing, termite prevention, and how to get discounts for more efficient insulation in the attic.  I see so many great details that I missed the first time through. Chris says "Doesn't this already feel like home?"

Since moving to Providence we've spent thousands and thousands on rent.  Now we'll have more control over the results of our work (and paychecks), which in turn leads to more freedom down the road.  We got really lucky.  We love this city, the housing market was ideal, the mortage rates low, the list goes on and on.  We also couldn't have done this were it not for the friends here who have made this city feel like home, and the supports of family and friends who have helped us emotionally through life's dramas, and financially in our pursuit of non-profit careers.  Not for a minute could we even think that we got to this place by ourselves.  And I know the respite of this home will enable us give more when we're outside of it.

Garden on the Deck: Unusual Containers (round 2)

7/24/10.
This year I volunteered to grow flowers for the Flower Tower--a community art project that was part of a local art/party festival. A friend and co-worker was overseeing the growing, someone sewed bags (made from recycled billboard material - if I remember correctly), and a bunch of us grew flowers for them. At the event, attendees planted individual flowers in the bags, and when it was all over, the flowers were mostly broken down and given to schools and retirement communities. (To see the flower tower up: here)
I grew wildflowers and nasturtium and transplanted them into the bags just before the event. (Note: The bags have holes punched into the bottom for drainage). While in my care, I noticed the bags hung well on my deck (with bungie chords)--so well, that I asked to buy an empty bag when the event was over.
>Instead, my friend gave me a bag full of flowers (below). The bag takes up no floor space on my small deck garden (and so, is a great use of space), and the flowers seem to love it. This is definitely one of cooler containers in the garden - and will be a permanent fixture for sure.

Canoeing in downtown Providence

Canoeing in downtown Prov, 7/17/2010.

Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council holds paddles all over RI in the summer and fall. If I could go to all of them, I would. This was our second. Last year we paddled in a reservoir (here) and this year, we paddled in a canoe (unlike the majority of the group who elected to skim along in kayaks) through downtown Providence. We worked our butts off and banged into a few big iron Water Fire sconces. All in all, it was insane and I loved it. So much so, that when given the opportunity to paddle around in a rowboat in Little Compton the following week, I dove in with reckless abandon. I'll get those pics up soon. All of these photos were taken on my phone.

Big Pink

taken 12/20/09.

A few nights ago, after the winter storm, our sky turned pink and lavender. Unlike our normal sunsets, the light was reflected (by the snow) onto everything, intensifying the color. I saw the sky change while in our front room & had to rush to find the camera before it passed. At work the next day, a co-worker said she had done the same (little RI!). These photos don't capture the color perfectly, but they're close. And they're entirely untouched.

First Snow

12/6/09.
These last months have been flying by. When that happens, I know I'm too busy or that I need to stop pushing myself so hard. I'm exhausted when I get home and crashing earlier and earlier. this is not working! Somehow it's December and I'm sure 'tomorrow' it'll be over. Anyway.
Above = our first snow, last Saturday night/Sunday morning. We had just picked up our giganto xmas tree...waking up to our first snow fall the following day? Good timing. Before I even had a chance to post these photo of our snow dust, we were dumped on this morning. And this, of course, called for the spontaneous singing of snow-themed songs. ...Until I get in the car and realize I need to drive all the way to Woonsocket. And I have to do it every day we receive these gifts of snow dumps.

Up the Creek...

We've had so much going on recently--a friend's wedding, concerts (including U2!), a co-worker's art show, tenure celebrations, trips to see family, and it just keeps going. Oh, and a moonlit paddle! I wish I had pictures of it...Chris and I tried out a moonlit paddle this past Thursday in Johnston. Chris' first time in a canoe and the weather was perfect (though no moon). And after an hour, we got the hang of the canoe. With Chris in the driver's seat (the back), he [woops, I meant I!!!] had to paddle two strokes for every one of mine. It was an upper-body strength issue, I guess.

The very cool evening paddle was sponsored by the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council and I would recommend the outings to anyone. The next two go through downtown Providence and the Woonasquatucket Resevoir.

July Sparklers and Why do people love Garth Brooks?

Video of the Fox Point fireworks in Providence, 2009.

Despite my languorous state most weekends, we managed to head out to the fireworks in the Fox Point area in Providence. While the video works just fine (see above), my camera and I have been fighting lately. I brought home these lovely photos...just for you.The photos are almost as bad as the Garth Brooks song that was slipped into the soundtrack for the fireworks. It was called "Standing Outside the Fire" and it sounded more like Christian Rock than Country. I guess we're not in new york city anymore.
Boom boom pow.

NYC & Providence Vacay

Chris & his "pops" in the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, 5/13/09.

These last two weeks have been for Chris and I exactly what a vacay should be - no stress, no worries, nothing but enjoying time with friends and family. I had such a great time...and we were able to surprise Danielle on her b-day and catch up with Brian, all while in town. Must share, more pics from the last two weeks:
Outside of Citi Field, Chris with his parents.

We spent this last week catching up with Anne & Ashley here in Providence. One afternoon we headed down to Newport to meet up with Craig & Rosie for one of the most-fun & funnest 7 or so hours, bbqing and playing corn-hole. Did you know that CornHole has an official set of rules? I'll let the pictures of the latter speak for themselves.

A breakfast goodbye at Julian's. See you at the wedding!!
